African Dinka Headrest in Zoomorphic Style, Dinka People, Nile Basin Region South Sudan.
The Dinka are a nomadic tribe living in the southeastern marshlands of Sudan. These headrests are carved from one piece of wood by using a part of the tree trunk and the branches growing out of it. Called a Magere by the locals. These headrests are carried by the owner at all times. The amount and type of decoration serves to identify the clan and the rank of the owner.
