The Makonde are an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. The Makonde developed their culture on the Mueda Plateau in Mozambique. At present they live throughout Tanzania and Mozambique and have a small presence in Kenya. The Makonde are master carvers. The best-known works are the ‘tree of life’ carvings which are intricately carved wooden works of interlocking human figures representing both unity and continuity.

People are often shown performing traditional tasks and local work and are often depicted climbing or holding each other up (representing support). They commonly depict members of extended family – often representing multiple generations.

The Makonde people are known for their unique art style, and this figure is no exception. It is perfect for display in any home, office, or cultural space. Add a touch of African heritage to your collection with this beautiful sculpture.
