In several parts of Africa, particularly in Southern and Eastern regions, headrests for men and women serve as pillows which protect elaborate hairdos. Headrests become intimately associated with the owner, and become personal items of status for both men and women.

The example offered here is of a classic Ngoni style. The four supports refer to cattle legs, and are in a prevalent Ngoni design, amasumpa, which refers to cattle and the wealth they represent. Once largely dismissed by collectors as “mere” utilitarian objects, these elegant, understated forms are now much admired.
